The Great Reno Balloon Race - September 2009

The Great Reno Balloon Races - Sept 11-13Over 100 hot air balloons will take to the skies over Reno, Nevada this coming weekend for The Great Reno Balloon Race.  Since 1982, this event has attracted visitors from far and wide.  This year, an estimated 140,000 spectators are expected at this free event.  (click here for a program guide.)

The Glow Show will start the event on both Saturday and Sunday mornings.  Beginning at 5 a.m. balloons will be filled with hot air, as their burners cast a glow over the horizon.  As the balloons are filled, spectators will see, first-hand how a hot air balloon works.  A select few qualified balloons will then set out on Dawn Patrol.

Starting at 6:45a.m. on Friday, Saturdaty and Sunday,  a flurry of balloons will launch from Rancho San Rafael Park.  After this Mass Ascension, the tethered special shaped balloons lead the way to The Great Reno Balloon Race's Kids Corner. There you will find many activities for Children and families. From face painting to balloon activities like The Great Reno Balloon Race Poster Art Contest, where kids can design their own creative Balloon Race poster featuring their favorites from the event. Kids Corner is located in the far east corner of the field and sponsored by the Wilbur D. May foundation.

Among the uniquely shaped balloons that can be spotted at the event this year are the Energizer Bunny, Smokey the Bear, Tony the Tiger and new to the event this year, Pandy the Panda Bear.

If you're interested in flying in a balloon, The RE/MAX balloon will provide tethered balloon rides after Mass Assension. These rides are available to the general public for a $5.00 donation to the "Children's Miracle Network".
